End-of-Life Care

Supporting a loved one at the end of life

A nurse comforting a patient

When someone we love is nearing the end of life, we often wish we knew the "right" thing to do or say. The truth is gentler than that: simply being present matters most of all.

Be there

Your presence is a gift, even in silence. You don't have to fill every moment with words.

  • Sit close and hold their hand
  • Talk softly, or share comfortable silence
  • Play familiar music or read aloud
  • Reminisce about happy memories together

Comfort the senses

Small comforts can bring real peace:

  • Keep the room calm and softly lit
  • Offer gentle touch and familiar, soothing scents
  • Keep their lips and mouth moist
  • Adjust blankets and pillows for comfort

Say what matters

Many people and families find peace in simply speaking from the heart — "I love you," "thank you," "I forgive you," and "goodbye." There is no wrong way to say what's in your heart.

Care for yourself, too

Grief often begins before a loss. Lean on family, friends, and your hospice team, rest when you can, and give yourself grace. You are doing something loving and hard.

Our team walks alongside families every step of the way — including emotional support and bereavement care after a loss.
